Car Upholstery Protectant: Should I Scotchguard My Car?

Protect your car from any spills by using a protectant. However, scotchguarding may be a better idea if you have kids or animals who might get into the interior of your vehicle and accidentally spill something on there.

Scotchgard is a well-known car upholstery protector. It’s been around for decades and has been used by many people to protect their car interiors from dirt, stains, and damage. The “scotchgard auto interior fabric protector” is a product that can be purchased at stores like Walmart or Target.

There are a lot of items in the detailing market that are questionable at best. Many people doubt the efficacy of waxes and sealants, much alone automobile upholstery protectors.

In this essay, I’ll explain what upholstery sealants are and whether or not you should scotchgard your automobile, as well as provide some alternatives.

What Is Upholstery Sealant & Protectant, and How Do I Use It?

Simply explained, fabric protectors and sealants create a hydrophobic coating on textiles, causing liquids to bead and roll off instead of soaking in and staining.

Water spots and other liquids should be prevented by applying a fabric protectant like scotchgard or 303, in principle.

I’ll tell you right now that it’s not an impenetrable barrier.

While it may be advantageous in certain situations, it can only lead to disappointment if you have unreasonable expectations.

Is It Necessary to Scothguard Your Car?

Scotchgard, or one of our other suggested choices, is worth the effort.

While most people are skeptical of fabric sealants and protectants, I’ve personally seen their effectiveness and will continue to use them on my own vehicle and any others that I work on.

As the owner of an almost 18-year-old Fiesta, I have dreadful fabric seats that show every stain and damp damage.

I was anxious for a means to avoid water stains on the seats after spending hours and hours eradicating them. Thankfully, I did some research online and discovered these sealants.

Since then, I’ve never had to bother rolling up the windows when it rains. I’m certain my seats will be clear of water marks anyway, and even if they aren’t, the fabric protectant I applied will make cleaning them much simpler.

Even if the scotchgard didn’t work, I felt it wasn’t a significant loss at $10.

But, thankfully, it did.

Scotchgard Fabric Water Shield was the one I used. It’s long-lasting and intended to keep all types of upholstery dry.

It’s designed to be used on home goods and apparel, but also on automobile upholstery.

It’s quite easy to use; just spray it on your seats and wait for it to dry.

It dries clean and odorless, so you won’t even notice it’s there safeguarding your seats.

Since then, I’ve learned that Scothgard makes a car-specific product. Scotchgard Auto Fabric & Carpet Protector is the name of the product.

I feel it’s a pretty comparable product; both perform well, but the Auto Protectant is better at protecting against oils and other common automobile impurities.

Alternatives to Scotchgard

While scotchgard is adequate and will do the job, you may desire something better or different at times.

303 Fabric Guard is a high-tech fabric guard.

303 High Tech Fabric Guard

I purchased 303 Fabric Guard after I completed my can of Scotchgard.

If you’re unfamiliar with 303, they’re recognized for their protective gear. Trim dressings, fabric guards, and even rubber seal protectants are among the finest on the market.

The 303 High-Tech Fabric Guard is a potent stain repellent that will keep your seats free of even the toughest stains. It is suggested for use on boat coverings, convertible tops, and automobile interiors.

The fact that it’s recommended for use on a boat should give you an idea of how tough this product is.

The most significant disadvantage is the price.

It’s more costly than scotchgard, costing three times as much.

However, the price is justified (in my view), since it is the greatest fabric protector I have ever used. The money you save on interior finishing may be enough to cover the cost.

In all honesty, even if you use the whole bottle, it’s not a tremendous investment for a year’s worth of protection.

Fabric Guard by Chemical Guys

If you want to purchase a fabric guard from a real auto cleaning firm, I suggest the chemical guys fabric guard.

I don’t think it’s quite as excellent as 303, but it’s a lot less expensive and comes from a well-known detailing company.

The Chemical Guys Fabric Guard offers an invisible screen that repels both water and stains for well under half the price of 303.

Not only that, but it will also protect your garments from UV radiation and aid to prevent undesirable smells from staying in them.

While it’s designed for automobile upholstery, you may use it on various surfaces around the home or even your clothes.

The Chemical Guys claim that the protection will last up to a year, although this is highly dependent on how often each surface is used after treatment.

You’ll probably need to use it more often on the driver’s and passenger’s seats than on the rear seats.

This product is a good compromise between scotchgard and 303, but it also has several advantages that the others don’t.

Seat Covers for Cars

Personally, I am not a fan of car seat coverings. They’re rather bad in my opinion, but they do have their purposes.

If you know you’ll be driving your vehicle on a road trip or will have children or dogs in the car, why not simply use a seat cover to protect your seats?

Investing in the correct coverings can preserve your chairs much more effectively than using fabric sealants. You’ll also have the freedom to put them on and take them off whenever you choose.

Just don’t purchase yourself animal pattern coverings, which will make your vehicle seem cheesy while providing very little protection.

Personally, I’d go with something close to this.

So, Should You Use Fabric Protectant on Your Car Seats?

If you can afford it, I strongly advise you to try any of the above-mentioned protectants.

You’ll be happy with the items and recognize the advantages they give if you have reasonable expectations.
